Larkin's Wood

Dark, proper cathedral-like stuff happens under the canopy at Larkin's Wood, just east of Stevenage. The trees here are ancient - oak and beech mostly - and they create this almost medieval feeling you don't get in managed woodland. You're walking through something that's been left mostly alone, which is the whole point.

It's a walker's wood rather than a picnic spot. The paths wind through dense undergrowth and there's real topography to it - nothing flat and easy. Budget a couple of hours minimum if you want to actually explore, though you could drift through in forty minutes if you're just after the atmosphere. Bring proper boots; it gets muddy even days after rain.

History types will appreciate that this patch has escaped the usual suburban sprawl that's consumed so much of Hertfordshire. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards - it's refreshingly austere. Families with young children might find it a bit relentless; older kids who can handle a proper woodland walk will get something real from it.

The wood doesn't perform for the camera or announce itself loudly, which is precisely why it's worth the visit.
