The old industrial buildings on Lansdown have been transformed into working artist studios, and it's genuinely worth an afternoon if you're anywhere near Cheltenham. You walk through actual working spaces - painters, sculptors, printmakers - rather than a sterile white-cube gallery. Some artists are there when you visit, some aren't. That's part of the charm, if you like that sort of thing. It's less polished than a proper museum, more like stumbling into someone's creative life. The converted spaces feel honest. Exposed brick, big windows, natural light. You can actually talk to makers about their work, which beats reading a label any day. Allow a couple of hours to properly wander through. Not the sort of place to rush. It works particularly well if you've got teenagers old enough to appreciate craft and technique - younger kids tend to fidget. Admission is usually free or donation-based, depending on what's on. Worth checking ahead before you visit, as hours can be variable. If you're staying at Severnside Boat & Caravan Park just down the road, it's an easy drive into Cheltenham proper and worth combining with a wander around the town's Regency architecture and the decent independent shops. Go on a weekday morning if you can - Saturday gets a bit rammed with the Cheltenham crowd.
