Hatherley Park

The moment you step into Hatherley Park, you're in proper Gloucestershire countryside without having to drive far from Cheltenham. This nature reserve spreads across grassland and woodland, the kind of place where you actually spot things - birds, wildflowers depending on the season, the occasional deer if you're lucky and quiet. It's free to wander, which is the first thing in its favour.

Walkers will find it genuinely worthwhile. The paths are decent underfoot and the whole reserve rewards a slow pace rather than a circuit sprint. You're not looking at dramatic vistas or anything - it's intimate rather than grand - but that's rather the point. An hour is enough to get a real feel for it, though you could easily spend longer if you've got the time and the light's good.

It's the sort of place that actually works for families with younger kids who need proper space to run about without the pressure of a destination. Serious birdwatchers will know the spot already; casual naturalists will find enough to hold their attention. The proximity to Cheltenham means you can easily base yourself at one of the caravan parks - Briarfields is closest at under two miles - and use it as a gentle morning walk before heading into town or elsewhere in the Cotswolds.

No facilities to speak of that I could find, so come prepared. Spring and early summer are the obvious times, but winter walks here have their own appeal if the weather's kind.
