Lanivet Church

The church sits quietly on a hillside just outside Bodmin, its squat tower rising from a scatter of graves that feel properly ancient. Lanivet Church is medieval - we're talking 15th century - and it's the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a ghost round the chancel.

Inside, there's real character. The pews are worn smooth from centuries of use, and the whitewashed walls give it that austere, no-nonsense feel you get in so many Cornish churches. The tower offers solid views across the moorland if you're willing to climb - though it's tight going and not for anyone with dodgy knees.

Historically minded types will find it worthwhile. The building itself tells a story - simple, functional, built for worship rather than show. It's not the sort of place that demands hours of your time, though. Thirty minutes to an hour covers it properly, including a wander round the churchyard.

What works is combining it with a stay at Mena Farm, just down the road. The touring park gives you proper access to the Bodmin area without being right in town. From there, Lanivet Church makes for a pleasant morning walk or a quiet stop between other moorland exploring. Check locally for opening times before heading out - these village churches can be temperamental about access - but if it's open, go in. Free admission, naturally, and you'll have it largely to yourself.
