The hill itself sits between Ayrshire and the wider Lowlands, so it makes a logical stop-off if you're basing yourself in the area - particularly if you're staying at somewhere like The Pods at Auchenhean, which is only five and a half miles away. You won't need more than a couple of hours total, which means it works as a morning jaunt before heading elsewhere.

Historically this spot matters - battles were fought on these ridges, though you'll want to do your own digging if you care about the details. What you get now is solitude and space, which is increasingly rare anywhere near population centres. On weekends you might bump into other walkers, but it never feels busy.
