Langford Stonehenge

Three sarsen stones stand in a field near Bicester, quietly getting on with their business while Stonehenge gets all the fuss. Langford Stonehenge is real enough - a Neolithic monument from around 3500 BC - but it's decidedly modest compared to its famous Wiltshire cousin. What you're looking at is a fragment. Two uprights and a lintel remain, positioned in what used to be a larger circle. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of historical curiosity but won't hold your attention for more than twenty minutes.

The appeal lies partly in its ordinariness. There's no visitor centre, no crowds, no £17.50 entry fee. You can walk right up to the stones free of charge, which feels rather refreshing. The surrounding countryside is decent enough - flat Oxfordshire farmland that's pleasant rather than dramatic. Walkers heading between Bicester and the surrounding villages might incorporate it into a longer route, and history enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to see a genuine Bronze Age site without the circus.

If you're staying at Glebe Leisure or Weston Caravan and Campsite, both within a few miles, this makes an easy half-hour detour. It's not a destination in itself. But if you're already in the area, it's worth the brief visit - straightforward, free, and properly atmospheric in a low-key sort of way.
