You'll find yourself on a proper working farm the moment you arrive at Langford Lakes - which sets the tone straightaway. The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust runs this reserve with the kind of no-nonsense approach that comes from actually managing land rather than just talking about it. Two shallow lakes sit at the heart of the place, created from old gravel workings, and they've become genuinely important for wetland birds. Winter's the peak season if you're serious about spotting species - winter brings flocks of wigeon, pochard, and if you're lucky, the occasional pintail.

The walking is straightforward and accessible, nothing that'll leave you gasping. Paths loop around both lakes with viewing points positioned sensibly so you're not just staring at reed beds wondering if anything's actually there. Bring binoculars - seriously, it makes the difference between "nice walk" and "actually saw something interesting". Spring's also decent if you want to catch nesting activity, though the banks can get muddy underfoot.

Families with younger kids will get a couple of hours out of it, no more. Serious birdwatchers or photographers could happily spend half a day. It works well as part of a broader Salisbury area trip - you're only a few miles from Stonehenge Campsite & Glamping or Marshwood Farm Camping, both solid bases if you're doing a week round here.
