Langford Heathfield

Out on the Somerset levels near Taunton, Langford Heathfield is one of those spots that reveals itself slowly. You won't find crowds here, which is precisely the point. This is proper open heathland - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, where the sky feels genuinely big, and where the light changes constantly across the heath.

It's not a manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops. What you get is access to genuine lowland heath, home to specialist plants and wildlife that depend on this particular habitat. Walkers come here for the uncluttered landscape and the chance to spot heather in bloom if you time it right. Birdwatchers find it worthwhile too. The paths are manageable rather than demanding, making it suitable for families who don't mind a bit of muddy ground underfoot in winter.

There's no admission charge - it's simply accessible. Allow a couple of hours to properly explore without rushing. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and the fewest other visitors, though frankly the solitude is consistent throughout the year.

It's the sort of place you'd slot into a wider Somerset itinerary rather than drive specifically for, but once you're out there on the heath, you'll understand why locals protect it fiercely.
