Langdon Hills Recreational Ground

The views from Langdon Hills stretch across Essex like a proper reward for climbing up. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Thames, and the whole sprawl of the county opens out beneath you. It's genuinely impressive - the kind of vantage point that makes you understand why people bothered settling here centuries ago.

What you're doing up here is straightforward: walking. There are good paths through grassland and woodland, nothing technical, just honest rambling. The ground itself is designated as a nature reserve, so the ecology matters here - butterflies and birds show up regularly, which means you might actually see something worth stopping for rather than just trudging between A and B. Spring brings bluebells. Summer's peaceful enough that you'll hear the wind properly.

Based near Billericay, it's the sort of place that works well as a half-day excursion, especially if you're camping at Barleylands just down the road. Families with older kids will get something out of it - there's space to run about and the view never gets old - but younger children might find it a bit samey after an hour. Walking enthusiasts will rate it though, particularly as a gentler Essex alternative to the more famous spots.

There's a car park at the bottom, access is free, and you needn't book anything. The whole thing takes as long as you want, really. Worth combining with other bits of the area rather than making a special trip, but if you're already camping nearby, it's well worth the short drive.
