Langdon Hill's Country Park

Getting up to Langdon Hill from Billericay is a proper little climb, but it's worth every step. You're looking at 130 metres of elevation on what used to be chalk and gravel workings - not exactly dramatic stuff, but the views across the Thames estuary and towards Kent are genuinely impressive on a clear day. The country park spreads across 42 hectares of grassland, woodland and wetland, with clearly marked trails that take between twenty minutes and an hour depending on which way you fancy.

The visitor centre gives you the lay of the land without being preachy about it. There's a proper focus on the nature reserve side - you might spot muntjac deer, various birds, even the odd newt in the wet bits. Families with younger kids will manage the main loop without complaint, though the terrain's a touch uneven in places. Walkers looking for something beyond a flat stroll through Essex will appreciate the real undulation here.

It's free to wander about, which counts for a lot. The best time is spring through early autumn when the wildflower sections actually deliver something to look at. Bit of fresh air, decent views, back for lunch. That's the Essex formula done right.
