Langdale Wood

There's something almost otherworldly about walking into Langdale Wood near Malton. The trees close in properly - oak and beech mostly - and the noise of the outside world just drops away. It's the kind of place where you notice things: the smell of damp leaf litter, the particular quality of light filtering through the canopy, the way your footsteps sound different on the woodland floor.

This is proper woodland rambling territory. The paths wind through without being too manicured, and there's genuine woodland character - fallen logs, clearings, the odd stream cutting through. It's not vast, so you're not going to get lost, but it's big enough that an afternoon disappears without trying. Most walkers allow two to three hours to explore properly without rushing.

Families with older kids will find it engaging rather than exhausting. Younger children might find the lack of facilities limiting - there's nothing here in the way of visitor centres or ice cream vans, which is either its main charm or its main drawback depending on your mood. If you're after a proper woods-walk without crowds, this works. If you need entertainment infrastructure, look elsewhere.

Given how close you are to Malton, this fits well with a broader East Yorkshire exploring trip. Stay at either Yorkshire Wolds Glamping or Seaways Glamping and Camping - both genuinely excellent - and use Langdale as a morning or afternoon detour. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people actually enjoy being outdoors.
