Lane End Copse

A proper woodland walk through beech and oak, Lane End Copse sits just outside Alresford and gives you that deep Hampshire forest feeling without needing to venture far from civilisation. The trees are tall enough to make you forget you're in the South East, paths wind through naturally, and there's a genuine sense of quiet - the kind you don't get in the manicured country parks nearby.

It's straightforward walking territory, nothing demanding, which makes it ideal for families who want their kids to burn off energy without anyone complaining about their legs by the halfway point. You could do a quick loop in forty minutes or dawdle for a couple of hours if you're the sort who stops to identify birds and examine tree bark. There are enough routes threading through to keep it interesting on a second visit.

The copse works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at Woodlands Camping or Hampshire Hills - both within a few miles - since it's close enough that you're not spending half the day driving. Go early or late to avoid the dog-walker crowds, and definitely come in autumn when the beech leaves turn that coppery gold. Winter's atmospheric too, all bare branches and mud that actually feels like proper woodland rather than a municipal nature reserve.

Free to access, no visitor centre, no facilities - which is refreshing, honestly. Just trees and quiet. Bring waterproofs though; it drains sluggishly after rain.
