Lanchards Plantation

Dark conifers rising from sandy soil - that's Lanchards Plantation the moment you step in from the Dorchester side. It's a proper working forest rather than a manicured walk, with tall pines creating that cathedral-like quiet you don't often find in Dorset.

The main appeal here is straightforward: shaded woodland trails that stay dry even after rain, thanks to the sandy ground beneath. On a hot summer's day, it's genuinely brilliant for cooling off. The paths wind through without much fanfare - no information boards, no facilities - just you and the trees. That's either refreshing or underwhelming depending on your mood.

Walkers will find it useful as a quick leg-stretcher between Dorchester and the coast, or as part of a longer ramble. Families with young kids might get restless after thirty minutes or so, unless they're keen on foraging or spotting wildlife. The forest isn't particularly scenic in the postcard sense - you won't be standing on a ridge pointing at the Jurassic Coast. What you get instead is a decent bit of breathing room away from the town.

If you're based at Green Valley Yurts just down the road, it's worth knowing about for a quiet morning walk. Admission appears to be free, and there's no obvious gate or time restriction. Allow an hour or so if you're poking around; half that if you're just after a quick stretch of the legs. Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the Dorchester area and fancy some shade.
