Lamel Hill Battery

The earthworks at Lamel Hill sit quietly on the outskirts of York, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. What you'll find is a Roman artillery fort - the remains of raised banks and ditches that once formed a proper military installation, likely built sometime in the first century AD. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of historical curiosity rather than demanding it.

Walking the site gives you a real sense of how the Romans engineered their defences. The ramparts are still visible enough to trace the fort's outline, and there's something quite absorbing about standing where sentries once stood.
