Lambpits Spinney

A pocket of proper woodland just outside Stamford, Lambpits Spinney is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Dense oak and beech trees create a decent canopy, and if you time it right - autumn or early spring - the light filtering through makes it feel a world away from the Lincolnshire flatlands surrounding it.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling. The paths wind through comfortably enough, though it gets muddy after rain. Kids won't stay interested for ages, but it's a solid stretch of legs between other attractions, and the quiet is genuinely restorative.

Families based at Stamford Meadows Glamping - just under five miles away - will find this useful for a morning walk without going anywhere touristy. The woodland feels independent from the honeypot attractions of Stamford town itself, which matters if you're after something less crowded.

Don't expect facilities. There's no car park signposting, no information boards, no gift shop. That's actually its strength. Locals know it; most visitors don't. Free access, as far as I can tell. Spring bluebells are probably the highlight, if you can call it that. It's the sort of place that justifies itself in the walking rather than the destination, and there's nothing wrong with that.
