The stretch along Lakeside Boulevard in Doncaster is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for - and it's all the better for it. This waterfront promenade winds alongside the water with a proper mix of modern development and actual breathing space, which is rarer than you'd think in a town centre these days.

You've got cycle paths running the length of it, which makes sense if you're staying at Sunnyview Touring Park just down the road - grab the bikes and you can potter along here for an hour without thinking twice. The walking's easy enough for all ages, though if you've got toddlers expecting theme park excitement, they'll get bored. What you get instead is somewhere locals actually use, not somewhere built purely for tourists to photograph.

The real appeal here is as a break between activities if you're based nearby. Pop over from Bawtry caravan park for a stroll, grab a coffee if there's somewhere decent open, and clear your head. It's functional rather than jaw-dropping, but that's precisely why it works. No entrance fees, no queues, no nonsense - just a decent bit of waterfront to wander.

Come on a quieter weekday morning if you can. Weekends draw the full Doncaster crowd and it loses some of its calm appeal. Worth the detour from either caravan park if you need to break up a day of exploring South Yorkshire.
