Lake View Park

Water and woodland meet at Lake View Park, a nature reserve just outside Coventry where you can actually see what the name promises - a proper lake, and plenty of trees around it. The walk takes you round the water's edge with decent enough views, though don't expect dramatic scenery. It's the kind of place where you'll spot waterfowl, maybe a heron if you're lucky, and get some breathing room from the city.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from an hour here. The paths are straightforward, flat enough for pushchairs if the ground's not waterlogged, though it can get muddy after rain. Kids won't stay entertained for hours - there's no playground or cafe - but it's fine as a morning stroll or a leg-stretch between other activities. Bring binoculars if you're into birds.

If you're staying at Hollyfast Caravan Park or Somers Wood nearby, this is worth adding to your itinerary without planning your day round it. It breaks up a Coventry visit well enough, though it won't be the highlight of anyone's trip. Quiet, free to access, and never crowded - sometimes that's exactly what you want.
