Lake Meadows Park and Playground

The lake itself is the draw here - a proper expanse of water that catches the light beautifully on clear days, surrounded by grassland and mature trees that give the whole place a sense of breathing space. Lake Meadows sits just east of Billericay, and it's the sort of spot where you can actually watch wildlife rather than just read about it. Herons, ducks, dragonflies in summer - they're all here if you're patient enough to look.

The playground keeps younger children occupied for a solid hour or so, though don't expect anything cutting-edge. It's functional, safe, and does the job without fuss. The real value is in the walking trails around the water's edge and through the reserve itself. Families with kids old enough to manage a decent walk will get more out of this than toddlers, though everyone finds the lake itself calming.

You're looking at a couple of hours well spent here - less if you've got restless five-year-olds in tow. It's free, which is always welcome, and there's space to spread out on the grass in decent weather. The reserve feels genuinely wild in places, not overly manicured, and that's rather refreshing for Essex.

Stuarts Wood Campsite and Barleylands are both within a few miles, making Lake Meadows an easy add-on to a longer stay. It pairs well with exploring Billericay's town centre afterwards, or using it as a morning stop before heading elsewhere in Essex.
