Lagoon 4

The water at Lagoon 4 sits perfectly still most mornings, which is precisely why birdwatchers make the pilgrimage to this corner of Rutland Water. It's one of four lagoons dotted around the reservoir's edge, each a bit different in character, and this one rewards patience with sightings that'll have you reaching for binoculars you forgot to pack.

You're looking at a shallow body of water that's become a magnet for waders and waterfowl, especially during migration seasons. The vantage point is decent enough - open enough to scan without too much vegetation blocking your line of sight, which sounds boring until you realise that's exactly what makes it functional. Families with young kids might find twenty minutes here stretches on a bit; serious ornithologists could easily spend three hours.

The nearest proper town is Oakham, which sits about fifteen minutes' drive away and offers the usual services if you need a coffee before or after. Getting here is straightforward enough - it's part of the larger Rutland Water circuit, so if you're already exploring the reservoir you'd factor this in naturally. If you're staying at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, it's a proper easy excursion, especially if the weather's turned and you need something low-key.

Free to access, which is the main selling point really. No facilities on site though, so come prepared. Early morning or late afternoon light is when it feels least disappointing.
