Lady Canning's Plantation Mtb Trail

The trail winds through proper moorland country just west of Sheffield, where you'll find Lady Canning's Plantation offering some genuinely rewarding singletrack through mixed woodland and open ground. It's mountain biking terrain that doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is - challenging in places, flowing where it counts, and honest about the climbs.

This is firmly a riders' destination rather than a casual family spot. You need decent bike handling skills and reasonable fitness to enjoy it properly. The woodland sections can get technical and muddy, particularly after rain, and some of the gradient changes will sort out whether you're comfortable on a bike or just going through the motions. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you actually want to ride it properly rather than just walk the sections that scare you.

The beauty of basing yourself nearby - North Lees Campsite is only 3.4 miles away and well-reviewed - is that you can hit the trail fresh in the morning before the ground gets tracked up. Peak season (spring through early autumn) is best, though winter riding here can be spectacular if you don't mind the mud.

Walkers can use the trail too, though they're essentially following a mountain bike route rather than a dedicated walking path. It's not the gentlest outing for those wanting a straightforward stroll. But for anyone with a bike and some skill, it's the kind of local treasure that keeps you coming back.
