Lady Bay Church at All Hallows

The riverside walk to All Hallows at Lady Bay is half the appeal. You emerge from the Nottingham suburbs to find this modest medieval church sitting quietly by the Trent, looking rather like it's been there forever - because it has, since the 12th century at least. The building itself is small, honestly a bit weathered, but that's rather the point. There's genuine age in those stone walls and a proper sense of peace you don't find in town churches.

Inside, it's straightforward and uncluttered. The chancel's got some decent medieval work, and if you're into architectural history, there's enough to occupy you for twenty minutes or so. Most visitors, though, are walkers who've come down from Nottingham and stopped by en route rather than making a special trip. Fair enough - it's the location that makes it worth knowing about, not the interior alone.

Getting here on foot from the city is actually quite pleasant, following the riverside path. There's no charge to enter, and you can pretty much turn up whenever. The real value is combining this with a walk along the Trent. If you're staying at Birdholme Glamping or Wolds Wine Estate - both only five or so miles away - you could easily work this into a morning's exploring without fussing about opening hours.

It's not going to thrill kids or those after grand architecture. But if you're after a quiet moment by the river and a proper slice of medieval Nottinghamshire, this delivers that in spades.
