Knypersley Sports Club

The reservoir at Knypersley sits just outside Stoke-on-Trent as a proper working water body that's been transformed into something of a local nature reserve. It's the sort of place where you'll spot cormorants diving, herons picking their way along the shallows, and on a good day, a fair few birdwatchers with serious lenses doing their thing. The main draw is the walking circuit around the water - nothing too demanding, mostly flat, takes a couple of hours depending on how often you stop to look at birds or just soak in the quiet. Free access as far as I can tell, though facilities are minimal, so arrive with supplies sorted. Families with younger kids will manage fine here; it's not wildly dramatic, but there's enough going on to hold attention - the water reflects back views of the surrounding trees, and spotting wildlife becomes a decent little game. Winter and spring are probably best for birdwatching, when migrants pass through and the resident population is most active. Because it's barely a mile from Castle Camping and only a couple more from Sky View Caravan Park, it makes a sensible morning or afternoon outing if you're based nearby for a longer stay. It won't blow your mind, but it's a genuine escape from the industrial sprawl around Stoke, and that counts for something. Bring binoculars if you've got them.
