Knowle Park

The wetland habitat at Knowle Park, just outside Kenilworth, is a proper magnet for birdwatchers and anyone who fancies a straightforward walk through actual working countryside. You're looking at reed beds, open water, and grassland - the sort of place where you'll spot lapwings, reed warblers, and if you're lucky, kingfishers skimming low across the surface.

This isn't a manicured visitor attraction. It's a working nature reserve, and that's exactly its appeal. Bring binoculars and patience. The paths are easy enough for families with younger kids, though they'll likely get bored if they're not into wildlife spotting - there's no playground or café to break things up. Spring and early summer are peak times: the birds are vocal, the light's proper long, and the flowers are doing their bit.

If you're based at one of the nearby touring parks - Gate Farm is closest at under three miles - you could easily make this your morning or late-afternoon stop without burning half your holiday. An hour's walk covers the main loop comfortably. Pair it with a visit to Kenilworth town centre, which has actual shops and pubs worth your time.

The reserve is free to access, which is a bonus. No visitor facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and layers. Winter's quieter and can be moody in the best way, but you'll see fewer birds. Walkers will find it meditative rather than challenging - it's the sort of place you go to switch off rather than work up a sweat.
