Knockrobbin

Getting up Knockrobbin is a proper little expedition. The peak sits just outside Castle Douglas in Dumfries & Galloway, and if you're after a straightforward hill walk with actual views at the end, this delivers. The climb isn't brutal - most people manage it in under an hour depending on fitness - but it's steep enough to feel like you've earned something when you reach the top.

What you get is a 360-degree panorama across the Lowlands. Clear days are genuinely special here; you can see right across towards the Lake District on the English side of the border. The surrounding moorland and forest give it a proper wild quality without needing to trek for hours.

This works best for walkers with at least a modicum of fitness. Families with young kids might find the incline hard going, and it's not the kind of place where you can meander about for a full day - you're looking at two hours maximum, maybe three if you're slow. That said, it pairs brilliantly with basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks like Kippford View or Mollance Farm if you're planning a few days in the area. Castle Douglas itself has decent enough shops and cafes for a postwalking browse.

Weather matters here. Rain makes it muddy and visibility drops fast, so pick a decent day. No facilities at the summit, so bring water. It's free and always accessible - the kind of walk that doesn't require planning ahead.
