Knockorthie Wood

The woodland track at Knockorthie rises steeply through mixed forest just outside Ellon, and it's the kind of walk that feels properly wild without demanding mountaineering skills. Scots pines tower above, birch trees thin out the shadows, and in spring the forest floor erupts with bluebells - genuinely worth timing your visit for. Most people bash through in forty minutes to an hour, which is ideal if you're staying at Ythan Valley Campsite nearby and fancy stretching your legs without abandoning the kids for hours.

This is walker territory, not playground territory. There are no facilities, no interpretation boards, just you and the trees. The climb is genuine - nothing dangerous, but steep enough that small children might need a hand. The reward at the top is views over Aberdeenshire farmland that justify the huffing and puffing, though it's not dramatic enough to plan a holiday around on its own.

Where it shines is as part of a wider routine. You've got the campsite two miles away, and there's enough woodland to explore that you could spend a morning here without it feeling repetitive. Weather matters though - after rain it turns into a squelch, and Scottish midges love damp forest in summer. Go in late spring or early autumn when the light cuts through properly and the undergrowth isn't trying to eat you alive. Free to walk, no gate, no hours - just turn up and go.
