Knocking Knoll Long Barrow

You won't find gift shops or car parks at Knocking Knoll Long Barrow, just a Bronze Age monument rising quietly from the Hertfordshire countryside east of Henlow. It's the kind of place that rewards walkers willing to leave the main path - a long earthen mound that's been sitting here for somewhere around 4,000 years, looking much as it must have when Bronze Age families used it as a burial ground.

The barrow itself is modest in scale compared to the famous Neolithic sites down south, but there's something rather moving about standing beside something this old with barely another person around. You get a proper sense of the landscape these ancient communities knew - rolling fields that haven't changed all that much in terms of their bones, even if the villages have.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you can't clamber over it or peer inside - but it fits perfectly into a longer ramble through the Bedfordshire countryside. Family groups with young children might find it underwhelming; there's no interpretation board, no activities, just the mound itself. That said, older kids interested in archaeology or history will find it genuinely interesting.

The nearest town of Henlow sits just 5 or so miles away, making this a straightforward addition to a park holiday. Both Henlow Bridge Lakes and the five-star Almshoe Glamping are well-positioned as bases. Allow perhaps an hour if you're combining it with a circular walk, perhaps half that if you're just popping over to see it.
