About Knockespen
The summit takes maybe an hour from the car park, give or take. Path's straightforward enough, well-trodden and not technical. You're looking at decent views south towards the Solway and west across farmland that rolls on forever. On a clear day it's worth the effort; on a grey one, less so.
Families with older kids will manage it fine - nothing too steep to put anyone off. Solo walkers and anyone wanting a bit of solitude without the crowds will find it refreshingly quiet. If you've got a map and like picking out landmarks, this is exactly the sort of hill that rewards that kind of attention.
Base yourself at either Burnside of Ae Glamping or The Outdoor Hotel, both within spitting distance, and you can do Knockespen as a half-day walk before exploring Dumfries proper. The town's worth a poke around - decent shops, proper cafes, and the river's pleasant enough. This works well if you want a proper walk without spending the whole day on it, leaving the afternoon free for something else.
