Knockcannon

Knockcannon's a proper modest hill near Castle Douglas - nothing dramatic, but the walk rewards you with views across the Lowlands that make the effort worthwhile. You're looking out over Dumfries and Galloway's rolling countryside, that soft green landscape that doesn't shout at you but grows on you the longer you stand there.

The ascent itself is straightforward, taking maybe forty minutes to an hour depending on your pace and whether you're stopping for breath (no shame in that). It's the kind of walk that appeals to families who want something more interesting than a park stroll but don't fancy a proper mountain slog. Kids won't get bored, though by halfway up some will definitely complain. Bring water and decent boots - the ground can be boggy after rain.

Free to access, naturally. No visitor facilities up top, so you're not paying for cafes or car parks. Go on a clear day if you can - mist rolls in quickly here and you'll lose the whole point of the thing.

Stay locally and you're well-positioned. Galloway Glamping sits less than a mile away, which is convenient if you want proper glamp pods with that countryside feeling. Mollance Farm Caravan Park's three miles off, Loch Ken Holiday Park slightly further. All decent bases for a long weekend where you'd do Knockcannon as part of a broader exploration of the area. It's not a day-trip destination in itself, but slot it into a park holiday and it fills a morning nicely.
