Knock of Alves

The walk up Knock of Alves is brisk, steep in places, and absolutely worth doing if you're based near Forres. It's a modest peak by Highland standards - nothing that'll take your breath away in altitude - but the views across Moray are genuinely good, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Cairngorms. The path starts reasonably well-marked and climbs through moorland that gets increasingly open as you gain height. It's the sort of walk that feels proper rewarding for minimal effort, maybe forty minutes up if you're moving steadily.

This is ideal for active families who want something substantial without needing a full day's commitment, or for walkers using The Loft Glamping & Camping nearby as a base - it fits perfectly into a morning's activity before lunch. Solitary hikers will appreciate the quietness; you won't find crowds here. The summit itself is uncluttered, just open moorland and that view. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water and sensible kit. Wind can be a factor even on days that seem calm lower down.

The walk works well alongside other Moray attractions if you're holidaying in the area. Grab it early in your stay when legs are fresh. Don't expect a dramatic panorama - this is Scotland's quieter face, rolling and understated rather than dramatic. But that's partly why it's good.
