Knacker's Knowle

The climb up Knacker's Knowle rewards you with proper views across Dartmoor - proper being the operative word, because this isn't some gentle riverside stroll. It's a proper hoof, this one, and you'll feel it in your legs by the time you reach the summit.

The peak itself sits near South Brent, making it an accessible choice if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Ashbourne Woods or Whitehill Country Park. From the top you get that classic Dartmoor experience - rolling moorland stretching out, stone walls cutting through the landscape, and on a clear day, enough perspective to understand why people come here to decompress.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a five-minute jolly - allow a couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the top. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper walk will be fine; younger ones might find the ascent tedious, to be honest.

The real appeal is doing this as part of a longer Dartmoor day if you're staying in the area. Combine it with a walk around Whitehill Country Park or one of the other spots nearby, and you've got a decent outdoorsy break without needing to travel far. It's free, obviously - it's a peak on the moor. Go early or late to avoid the worst of any weather, and bring proper boots. The ground's rough and boggy in places.
