Kit Hill Country Park

The old tin mine stack dominates the skyline here - you'll spot it long before you reach Kit Hill itself. This 335-metre country park sits just outside Callington and offers proper moorland walking with genuine industrial history threaded through it. The highlight is scrambling up to that distinctive tower, which dates back to the Cornish mining boom and now serves as a landmark visible for miles across Devon.

Once you're up top, the views are excellent. You get unobstructed sight lines across rolling countryside, and on a clear day you can see right across to Bodmin Moor. The walking routes vary in difficulty - there's a gentler loop around the base if you're not keen on the climb, or you can push higher for the full experience. The ground's rough underfoot in places, so proper boots matter.

This works best for keen walkers and anyone interested in industrial heritage. Kids will enjoy the scramble and the chance to burn energy, though if they're very young the exposed sections might need careful supervision. Allow two hours minimum to do it justice, longer if you're taking photographs.

The park is free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter can be muddy. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks - Sunnyside Eco Glamping or Woodovis just a few miles away - Kit Hill makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. It's the kind of spot you'll remember for the views rather than facilities, which is exactly how it should be.
