Kirkandrews Bay

The bay curves gently along the Solway Firth, backed by low cliffs and salt marsh - proper coastal scenery without the crowds you'd get further south. It's a working shoreline: you'll see fishing boats, the tide comes in fierce, and the beach itself shifts between shale and sand depending on what the weather's done recently. Worth allowing a couple of hours to walk the foreshore and explore the rock pools when the tide's out. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though the approach isn't exactly paved and pushchairs can be tough going on the rougher bits. For history buffs, there's the remains of medieval settlement in the vicinity - Kirkcudbright itself, just a few miles inland, has far more of that story if you want it. The real appeal here is the quietness. You won't find arcades or ice cream vans. What you get is space, oystercatchers, and the kind of beach where you can actually think. If you're staying at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park - it's barely two miles away - this is an obvious half-day outing. Seaward Holiday Park is similarly close. Go on a clear morning when the Solway doesn't look quite so grey, and you might catch sight across to England. The walk back up from the shore is a bit of a huff if you're not expecting it, so factor that in. Free to access, naturally. Not for everyone, but if you're the type who prefers solitude to facilities, it's exactly the right beach.
