Kirk Hill

The walk up Kirk Hill rewards you with proper views across the Northumberland countryside. It's not particularly high - 312 metres - but the climb from Morpeth is steady enough that you'll feel like you've earned the summit. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Cheviot Hills, which justifies the trudge through the moorland approaches.

The peak itself is fairly exposed, so wind can be a real factor. There's a trig point marking the top, though it's not surrounded by any dramatic geology - this is moorland walking rather than dramatic mountain scenery. Most people will allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest car park, depending on fitness. Walkers get the most from this one; it's straightforward navigation on decent paths.

It works well as part of a wider exploration of the Northumberland uplands. If you're based at Tranwell Farm Holidays, just outside Morpeth, Kirk Hill slots neatly into a long weekend of moorland rambling. The walk itself is free, obviously, and there's good parking near the start. Spring and autumn are best - summer can be boggy after rain, and winter visibility can be disappointing. Save this for a clear day and you'll remember the views rather than just the climb.
