Kirby Hall

You'll spot the honey-coloured stone long before you reach the gates - Kirby Hall sits just outside Corby like some grand old aunt who's seen better days but hasn't lost her elegance. This Elizabethan mansion, built in 1570, is properly impressive in person: towering chimneys, ornate plasterwork if you can get inside, and grounds that speak to centuries of wealth and craftsmanship. The approach alone is worth the drive.

It's an English Heritage property, which means it's free to wander the outside and peer through windows - though opening times can be patchy, so check ahead. Expect to spend forty minutes to an hour here if you're thorough. History buffs will want longer; families with young kids might find it a bit slow unless they're into exploring empty rooms and spotting architectural details.

The real appeal is walking the perimeter, spotting the remains of the formal gardens, and getting a sense of the scale. The building's been through the mill - abandoned, restored, neglected again - but there's something rather moving about that. It's not a glossy museum experience; it feels like actually encountering history.

Stay at New Lodge Farm just up the road in Bulwick and you've got somewhere cracking to base yourself. The caravan parks are well-positioned for exploring this corner of Northamptonshire. Kirby Hall works best combined with other attractions in the area rather than as a destination on its own, but if you're passing through, it absolutely justifies a stop.
