Kipling Tor

The walk up to Kipling Tor near Bideford is proper steep once you get going, but it's over quickly enough. You're climbing through Devon woodland that feels like it's been here for centuries - dense, a bit wild, and the kind of place where you half expect to stumble on something unexpected around each corner. The tor itself is the payoff: a granite outcrop with views that stretch across rolling moorland and forest, and on a clear day you can see well beyond Bideford itself. It's the sort of spot that rewards the leg work.

This is walker territory, no question about it. Young kids might struggle with the gradient unless they're keen types, but teenagers and adults will find it satisfying. The woodland keeps things interesting - you're not just trudging up a bare hillside. On weekends it gets busy with local ramblers, which says everything about how worth the effort it actually is.

Allow an hour or so for the climb and a proper look around at the top. Best visited on a clear morning when you've got good visibility. It's free, naturally, and there's parking near the trailhead though spaces fill up quickly in season.

If you're staying at Braddicks Holiday Park just down the road, this is an obvious first morning walk. It's close enough for a quick outing but feels wild enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere.
