Kinmel Dunes Local Nature Reserve

The dunes at Kinmel stretch for a proper length along the coast just outside Rhyl, and they're genuinely worth a walk if you're staying at Golden Sands or any of the nearby parks. It's a local nature reserve, which means you won't find cafes or gift shops - just sand, marram grass, and the occasional hiss of the Irish Sea wind in your ears.

What you're actually doing here is walking through one of North Wales' better examples of natural coastal dune habitat. The vegetation is low and tough, adapted to salt spray and sandy soil. In summer you might spot small flowers pushing through; in winter it's just windswept and moody. The whole thing feels refreshingly undeveloped compared to Rhyl's seafront proper.

It works best for walkers and anyone after a bit of peace rather than entertainment. Kids might manage thirty minutes if they're into exploring, but there's no playground or attractions to hold their attention. The reserve is free to access - you just turn up and walk around. Allow an hour if you're doing a proper circuit, or twenty minutes if you're just stretching your legs from the caravan.

For a park holiday in the area, this slots nicely between a rainy afternoon at Golden Sands or Ty Mawr and heading into Rhyl itself for actual attractions. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you came to the coast in the first place, rather than why you paid for a holiday park.
