Kingswear Castle

You'll spot this squat, red-sandstone fortress the moment you cross the ferry from Dartmouth. Kingswear Castle sits right on the water's edge, a proper 16th-century gun fort that's seen better days but still commands the estuary entrance with undeniable presence.

It's small - you could walk the perimeter in fifteen minutes - but that's rather the point. Built in 1494 to defend Dartmouth Harbour from French raids, the castle was designed to be scrappy and functional rather than grand. The red walls are thick, the windows are narrow slits, and climbing the spiral stairs to the gun platform gives you a genuine feel for life as a Tudor garrison soldier. Not comfortable, mind you, but strategic.

History enthusiasts will get a kick from the fortifications themselves, though there's minimal interpretation on site. Parents with younger children might find it underwhelming unless they're already castle-mad - it's genuinely tiny and you'll be done before the kids have properly warmed up. Walkers heading along the Dart Valley Trail will pass practically on top of it.

The real value is in the setting. Standing on the walls watching fishing boats and ferries move through the narrows, you grasp why someone planted a castle here five centuries ago. It's free to access and worth an hour if you're stopping in Paignton or exploring the wider area. The nearby South Bay Holiday Park puts you within reasonable distance for a proper coastal base, though you'll want to factor in the ferry crossing from Dartmouth to reach it.
