Kingstone AD MM

A Roman fort that's been quietly holding its ground near Uttoxeter for nearly two thousand years. Kingstone AD MM sits on what was once a crucial military post along Rykneld Street, the Roman road that connected the Midlands to the north. What you find now is mostly earthworks - raised ground where the fort's defences once stood, plus scattered stonework and the odd artefact if you know where to look. It's not dramatic in the way Hadrian's Wall is dramatic, but there's something proper engaging about walking the perimeter and trying to picture the soldiers who garrisoned it.

This is one for history buffs and walkers rather than anyone expecting manicured trails or visitor centres. You'll need to do a bit of homework before you arrive - the site doesn't advertise heavily and there's no formal infrastructure. Bring decent boots; the ground can be boggy. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually trace the outline of the fort walls across the field.
