Kingston Gate, Richmond Park

The gate itself is modest - a Victorian brick structure that marks the boundary between Richmond Park proper and the wider landscape beyond. What draws you here, though, is the walk. It's the sort of entrance that feels properly historic without being showy about it, and once you're through, the whole character of the park opens up differently.

This is serious walker territory. From Kingston Gate you can head straight into some of Richmond's best woodland trails, with the deer roaming about just far enough away to feel wild but close enough you'll actually spot them. The paths here are quieter than the main Richmond areas - you won't have crowds, which is the real appeal. Allow a good three hours if you want to loop around and really explore; an hour's gentle stroll works too if you're just passing through.

Families with older kids will find this far more engaging than the manicured bits closer to town. Younger children might get restless without a specific destination in mind. Serious walkers should make this their base - it's the entry point to some cracking woodland that most Richmond visitors never bother with.

The nearest proper facilities are back towards Chessington, about five miles away. Coming from Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club Site or staying near Chessington World of Adventures Resort, Kingston Gate gives you a proper escape into the park without the tourist crush. Go early on a weekday if you can - the difference is noticeable.
