Kingston Cemetery & Crematorium

Kingston Cemetery is one of those places you don't set out to visit on holiday - until you realise you're passing right by it and curiosity gets the better of you. Located just outside Chessington, this Victorian burial ground sprawls across surprisingly peaceful grounds that feel more like a park than a place of rest.

What strikes you first is how green it is. Ancient trees line the pathways, and the grounds are meticulously maintained. You'll find yourself wandering past ornate Victorian tombs, reading inscriptions from the 1800s, spotting the occasional angel statue. It's genuinely atmospheric without being morbid. History enthusiasts get a real kick from the architectural details and the stories carved into stone. Kids can handle a short walk here, though it's not the sort of place they'll want to linger unless they're properly interested in graveyards.

There's no charge to walk around, and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how thorough you want to be. The crematorium building itself is modern and functional - not particularly photogenic.

It works well as a brief detour if you're staying at Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club Site or heading towards Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Frankly, unless you're into Victorian architecture or local history, it's not worth a special trip. But if you're in the area, it's a quiet spot for a wander and a bit of reflection. Proper old-school London, away from the theme park crowds.
