Kingsgate Park

The moment you step into Kingsgate Park near Wotton-under-Edge, you're into proper woodland - the sort that feels genuinely wild despite being just outside town. It's a nature reserve, so there's no theme park nonsense, just acres of trees, paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get often enough.

What you're actually doing here is walking. Lots of it. The paths wind through mixed woodland where you'll spot birds if you're lucky, and wildflowers if you time it right. Spring and early summer transform the place - bluebells carpet the forest floor and everything feels fresher than it has any right to be. There are proper woodland trails rather than manicured loops, which means you can spend two hours here or push for a longer ramble depending on mood.

This is genuinely good for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground without constant hand-holding. Under-fives get bored after about forty minutes. Walkers and nature types will absolutely rate it - there's enough woodland to lose yourself in without getting properly lost.

If you're staying at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping just down the road, Kingsgate Park is your walking spot. It's free and open year-round, though muddy as hell in winter. Go midweek if you can - weekends pull in a decent crowd and you lose that genuine woodland peace. Allow at least an hour, longer if you're serious about it.
