King's Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist spot, King's Copse sits just outside Winchester and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Hampshire forest - towering beeches, quiet paths, and enough space to actually breathe. The trees here are genuinely tall, casting everything in that soft green light you only get in older woodland. There's no entrance fee or visitor centre faffing about; you just turn up and walk.

It's the sort of place that suits families who aren't after screaming and slides - children can run ahead without parents losing their minds, and the paths are straightforward enough that even small legs won't get frustrated. Dog walkers love it, and if you're after a break from sightseeing in Winchester itself, an hour or two here clears your head properly. Allow two to three hours if you want to actually explore rather than just dash through.

Timing-wise, autumn is exceptional - the beech trees turn that burnished gold - but it's decent year-round. Spring's busy with bluebells in the right season.

If you're camping at Holden Farm or staying at Beechen Glamping nearby, King's Copse makes a natural morning outing before hitting Winchester town centre.
