Kings Bridge

Kings Bridge stands just outside Canterbury, a proper medieval crossing that's been doing its job for centuries. It's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - low-slung stone arches spanning the river, worn smooth by centuries of traffic and water. The bridge itself is modest, nothing that screams drama, but that's rather the point. This is working heritage, not a theme park version of it.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's a decent riverside path on either side, and the bridge makes a natural halfway point on a circular route if you're exploring the countryside around Canterbury. History types will appreciate the medieval construction - you can see the original stonework if you know where to look. Kids might find it interesting for five minutes, then want to throw stones in the water, which is fair enough.

It's free to cross and worth a detour if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite is barely a mile and a half away, making this walkable from your pitch. Even better if you're glamping at Canterbury Lodges or Preston Court, since you'll want to stretch your legs anyway.

Allow maybe half an hour if you're making a specific trip, longer if you're building it into a walk. The bridge works best as part of a bigger ramble rather than a standalone stop. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the stone properly and the towpath is quieter.
