Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve

The moment you step into Kingley Vale, you understand why this reserve matters. Ancient yew trees - some over a thousand years old - tower above you in a way that feels genuinely primeval, their gnarled trunks twisted like something from a fairy tale. It's only a few miles from Chichester, yet feels genuinely remote.

This is proper woodland walking territory. The main path winds through 400 acres of chalk downland and yew forest, with options ranging from a gentle 30-minute stroll to a more ambitious circular loop if you've got legs and lungs for it. The views across the South Downs from the higher sections are worth the climb - you can see right across the Weald on a clear day. Spring brings bluebells that carpet the forest floor; autumn's the best time for light and color.

It's free, which is brilliant, and there are no restrictions on opening hours for the most part - though check locally as conditions can change. Families with confident walkers will love it; the terrain is manageable but it's not a pushchair park. History enthusiasts should come prepared - Bronze Age burial mounds dot the reserve, and the yews themselves are living history.

If you're staying at Bow Hill Farm or Concierge Camping, both just 2-3 miles away, this makes an excellent half-day outing. Combine it with a wander around Chichester itself or other South Downs reserves, and you've got a proper walking holiday sorted. Bring good boots though - it can get muddy, and the chalk can be slippery after rain.
