King Tor

The granite outcrop rises abruptly from Dartmoor's moorland, commanding views that stretch across Devon's wild heart. King Tor itself isn't particularly high - you're looking at around 1,400 feet - but the exposed rock makes it feel more dramatic than the numbers suggest. The scramble to the summit takes twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you dawdle, and you'll want to dawdle because the panorama justifies every breath.

History types will appreciate the Bronze Age cairn crowning the peak, evidence that people have been drawn to this spot for over 3,000 years. It's that sense of continuity that gets you more than the stones themselves - generations climbing this same granite thinking about the same sprawling moorland. The actual exertion matters. You're not being shuttled to a viewing platform here.

Walkers absolutely should make the trip. It's accessible enough that families with moderately fit teenagers won't struggle, though younger kids might find the rocky final approach testing. The moorland approach is straightforward, and once you've done King Tor, you can link it to nearby peaks or simply retrace your steps. Allow a couple of hours for the full experience without rushing.

It's free, naturally, being a Dartmoor feature. Best visited on a clear day - mist here transforms it from dramatic to invisible, and there's little point climbing blind. Late spring through early autumn gives you the fairest weather odds. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you within easy striking distance: Dartmoor National Park itself is just five miles away, making King Tor a proper diversion for anyone based there.
