King George's Playing Field

A proper stretch of green space just outside Fleetwood, King George's Playing Field is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like one - rough grass, scrubby edges, the kind of spot where you'll see more birds than manicured flowerbeds.

The appeal here is straightforward. Walkers get a decent circuit without the crowds you'd find at bigger reserves. Birdwatchers reckon it's worth a morning, especially if you're into waders and wildfowl. The field itself is open enough that you can see what's about, and the paths are manageable in most weather.

It's not a destination you'll build a holiday around on its own, but if you're based at Wilson House Holiday Park up the road, it's an easy leg-stretch. Combine it with Fleetwood's seafront and you've got a solid half-day. Kids under ten might get bored after an hour unless they're the type who enjoy a bit of nature spotting.

The reserve doesn't demand much planning - turn up, have a walk, see what you spot. No obvious entrance fees or time restrictions, which is how it should be. Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon gives you the best chance of seeing wildlife actually doing something rather than hiding. Winter months tend to bring more birds through, so if you're keen on that side of things, go October through March.
