King George's Field

The walk down to King George's Field from Dawlish takes you through some proper Devon countryside before suddenly opening up to a stretch of grassland that feels miles away from the holiday park crowds. It's a nature reserve, though you won't find formal paths or visitor centres - just open fields where local birders come to spot warblers and finches, especially during migration seasons.

The appeal here depends entirely on what you're after. If you're a keen birdwatcher or keen on wildflowers, you'll find it worthwhile. Families might manage half an hour wandering about, though there's not much to keep kids engaged beyond counting butterflies. The real value is as a circuit walk - combine it with a stroll into Dawlish itself and you've got a solid couple of hours out.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are when the reserve actually delivers - the winter months are rather flat, honestly. Summer can get overgrown. There's no entrance fee that we're aware of, and parking is the usual Dawlish arrangement - street parking near the town works best.

For anyone staying at Haven Devon Cliffs or Leadstone Camping, it's close enough for a morning outing without feeling like you're heading to a major attraction. It's the sort of place that slots nicely into a broader day of exploring the coastline rather than something you'd plan an afternoon around. Worth the detour if you're already in Dawlish, but don't rearrange your itinerary for it.
