King George V Park

The wetland reserve just outside Cheltenham is one of those places that surprises you with how much there is to see in a relatively compact space. King George V Park is essentially a working gravel pit that's been transformed into a nature reserve - ponds, reed beds, grassland, the lot. You're walking alongside water most of the time, binoculars in hand if you've got any sense.

Birdwatchers will find their people here. The reserve is genuinely good for spotting waterfowl, warblers, and if you're lucky, rarer visitors. Winter brings different birds than summer, so timing matters if you're after specific species. The walking trails are straightforward enough - nothing demanding - and you can knock it out in 90 minutes or take a leisurely couple of hours if you're properly into the wildlife.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first 45 minutes unless they're genuinely interested in birds or spotting dragonflies. Older children and proper nature enthusiasts will get more from it. The paths are accessible and well-maintained, which is decent.

It works well as part of a wider Cotswolds trip, especially if you're staying at Severnside Boat & Caravan Park nearby. Use it as a morning activity before heading elsewhere - it's not a full-day destination, but it's worth the detour if you're in the area and the weather's reasonable.
