King George V Park

The path into King George V Park curves gently through mature woodland before you spot the river. It's a proper riverside reserve just outside Ellon, and the first thing that strikes you is how quiet it is - not eerie, just genuinely peaceful. The Ythan flows through here, and you'll see why locals have been walking these banks for decades.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from this one. The trails are well-maintained without being fussy about it, and there's genuine wildlife interest - waterfowl, woodpeckers if you're lucky, and in summer the vegetation gets thick enough that you feel properly away from things. Allow a couple of hours if you're leisurely; thirty minutes if you just want a quick circuit. It costs nothing and there are no opening hour restrictions, which is refreshing.

The woodland canopy keeps things cool even on warm days, though I'd warn you the ground can be boggy after rain - proper walking boots are sensible. Families with young kids will find the easier stretches manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the muddier sections.

It pairs nicely with Ythan Valley Campsite, just 3.6 miles away. If you're basing yourself there for a few days, this reserve fills a morning perfectly - low-key enough that you're not overloading the itinerary, but interesting enough that it's not just padding between bigger attractions. Ellon itself is close by for supplies and lunch.
