Kincardine Old Church

The ruins of Kincardine Old Church sit on a quiet rise just outside Ardgay, and they're worth a gentle wander if you're staying in the area. What remains is a roofless stone shell - medieval walls still standing, grass growing thick between the flags underfoot. You get a sense of how it must have dominated the glen centuries ago, before the newer church was built and this one left to the weather and time.

It's the kind of spot that appeals to history-minded walkers rather than kids looking for entertainment - no plaques, no visitor facilities, just the building itself and whatever you bring to it. The Highland landscape rolls around it, which counts for something. On a clear day the views down the strath are proper lovely.

No admission charge, no set hours. You can walk up from Ardgay in under twenty minutes, which makes it an easy half-hour loop if you're based at somewhere like Ardgay Glamping nearby. The walk itself is pleasant enough - track through trees, then open ground. The church won't keep you long, maybe fifteen minutes to have a proper look around, but the journey out gets you moving and into the air.

Don't expect interpretation boards or a café. This is archaeology by feel rather than explanation. If you're the type who enjoys reading old stones and imagining what stood here before, you'll find it worthwhile. If you need structure and information, you might feel it's a bit spare for the effort.
